The Cooley’s Anemia Foundation is accepting applications in both its translational research in adult thalassemia program and its medical research fellowship program.

RFA FOR TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH IN ADULT THALASSEMIA

The Cooley’s Anemia Foundation invites national and international applications for 2009-2010 grants in translational research in adult thalassemia. The goal of this initiative is to recruit investigators from all disciplines and backgrounds (MD, RN, PhD, MPH, MSW) to address one or more of the following areas in terms of the adult patient with thalassemia: fertility, pregnancy and family planning; quality of life/psychosocial; burden of disease; the heart; gene therapy. The stipends will be $60,000 annually with possibility of one year renewal upon submission of a renewal application and approval by the Foundation’s Scientific Review Committee and Board of Directors. Junior and senior faculty are eligible; fellows and trainees are not eligible. Investigators must interact directly with patients or patient-related data. Awards will be announced in June 2009. Letters of intent must be submitted by January 14, 2009. The deadline for receipt of completed applications for the RFA on translational research in adult thalassemia is Monday, February 2, 2009.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The Cooley’s Anemia Foundation invites national and international applications for 2009-2010 Research Fellowships. Postdoctoral and junior faculty members investigating clinical or basic research related to thalassemia are eligible. Applications studying iron overload, iron chelation, methods of non-invasive iron measurement, quality of life, hepatitis C, osteoporosis, fertility, bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy are encouraged. Postdoctoral fellows should hold MD, PhD or equivalent degrees and require sponsorship by a faculty mentor. Junior faculty applicants should not have held the rank of Assistant Professor for more than 5 years and must not have already received R-01 level support. Stipends will be $40,000 annually with possibility of a one year renewal upon submission of a renewal application and approval by the Foundation’s Scientific Review Committee and Board of Directors. Successful postdoctoral fellows are expected to use the funds for salary support, whereas junior faculty applicants may use funds for salary or non-salary research support. Awards will be announced in June 2009. The deadline for receipt of Research Fellowship applications is Monday, February 2, 2009.
