More than 4,000 Thalassemia Patients in Malaysia

August 10, 2009 – According to an article on Bernama.com, the number of registered thalassemia patients in Malaysia has risen to 4,385, up from 2,500 in 2004.

The article does not indicate to what extent the increase in the numbers is due to efforts on the part of the nation’s agencies to identify existing patients and to what extent it indicates actual new cases.

The article also indicates that approximately 1,000,000 people, or 5% of the population, are estimated to carry the trait for thalassemia.
