CAF was forwarded the following information from Focus Pointe Global and Paula Gottlieb Herman, both of which are looking for thalassemia patient to participate in market research studies in New York City the week of April 27.

Please be advised that many market research projects are likely to be conducted on behalf of a for-profit company, such as a member of the pharmaceutical industry.

Focus Pointe Global:“Focus Pointe, a medical marketing research firm, is conducting a study to obtain feedback from patients and care givers who have had at least eight blood transfusions in the past 5 years because of sickle cell disease, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or thalassemia…(Eligible patients) will be paid $125 for participating in a 60-minute in-person interview at (our) midtown Manhattan office. These interviews are being conducted the last week of April. Interested parties should contact (Focus Pointe Global) at (800) 220-3730 to schedule an appointment and reference the Blood Transfusion Study #35760CY. Times to call: Monday-Friday, 11:00 am- 11:00 pm EST and Saturday 12:00 pm- 6:00 pm EST. (Focus Pointe) will ask potential participants a few screening questions to determine their eligibility. (Focus Pointe) conducts screening and research in compliance with HIPAA…(and) does not sell anything…(They) will report the information that participants provide to (their) sponsor anonymously and in the aggregate.”

Paula Gottlieb Herman:Thalassemia Major & MDS Patients needed April 28, 29, 30 and May 1st in mid-town Manhattan for a research study on iron overload. Participants will be paid $200 for their opinions. If you have had or are still having blood transfusions, and are currently undergoing chelation therapy to remove the iron, please call Paula Gottlieb Herman at (516) 334-7481. We are looking for 4-5 articulate people who are comfortable talking about their experiences with Thalassemia or MDS. You can choose to be part of a mini focus group lasting 2 hours or an individual interview lasting 1 hour. Interview times will start at 8AM and end by 8PM to make it flexible for your schedule. Your input is essential to the success of this research study.”
