CDC Webinar on Cardiovascular Complications on Nov 18

October 26, 2021 – Dr. John Wood will be presenting a webinar on November 18 at 2:00 pm (Eastern)  entitled “The Heart in Thalassemia” from 2:00 – 3:00 PM ET. This webinar is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Public Health Webinar Series on Blood Disorders.

In this webinar, Dr. Wood will discuss the three most common cardiovascular complications in thalassemia: myocardial iron overload, pulmonary hypertension, and accelerated cardiovascular aging. He will cover the biology of iron metabolism and its derangements by transfusion therapy, the monitoring of iron overload by MRI, and the prevention and treatment of iron cardiomyopathy. He will also discuss the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension, the critical role of the spleen in preventing disease, screening for increased pulmonary artery pressures, and the management of established disease. Lastly, he will examine the consequences of our successes in managing iron cardiomyopathy.

This webinar is free and open to clinicians who desire more information about thalassemia. It is also open to patients and families.
