Parkinson, a high school junior, is putting this concert on as her senior project and it looks to be a very exciting event. Parkinson first got involved with the Foundation when her cousin, Ian Wiles, passed away due to complications from thalassemia this past December. She participated in this year’s CAF/TAG Care Walk at Bloomsburg University. Anxious to do more, Parkinson decided to raise awareness for the cause in a fun and positive way.

“Ian was really into music, and so am I, plus a lot of my friends are in bands,” said Parkinson. This was the perfect opportunity for her to combine two passions she and Wiles shared: music and helping others.

The concert will be held at the Waverly Community House in Waverly, PA on July 20, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Performers will include The Redeyes (the band Wiles was a member of), Public Service Announcement and Babylon, all local bands. The cost to get into the event is a $7.00 donation. Baked goods and pizza will be sold, as well as Cooley’s Anemia Foundation bracelets; all proceeds benefit the fight against thalassemia.

Parkinson’s main goal is “to raise awareness so people go and get tested for the trait and more people can know what to do to help, I really hope people come to support the cause and learn more about it.”
