Your treating physicians need to know about all medications you're taking - even if the medications aren't for anything related to thalassemia.

January 3, 2008 - As the new year gets off to a start, CAF wants to remind patients that your doctors and nurses need to know about all medications you're taking, even if they're for something that isn't at all related to your thalassemia. This includes any over-the-counter medications and supplements as well as presription medications.
For example, some medications may possibly have an effect on ferritin levels or liver enzymes. A doctor or nurse needs to know if you are using medications for something unrelated to thalassemia - perhaps for a dermatological issue, for example - so that s/he can determine the proper efficacy of your chelation therapy.
It's better to give your health care providers all possible information, so that they can make more informed decisions with you.
